Oil (Buildings) 2010 spring

The most common mode of transportation in the U.S is by car. The endless, flat, wide roads of asphalt are like symbols of modernization. As opposed to the massive roads, there are alleyways in Japan and Europe, which were created long ago by the very steps of people. These alleys are not straight, with occasional turns which lead to unexpected landscapes. I drew alleyways which provoke questions such as, "Is there anything ahead of this alley?", "Where does this alley lead to?"
The houses that line up along the side of the road are crowed, like Lego blocks stacked together. The buildings create art, a colorful creation unimaginable by the first person who built a house in that area.
　

アメリカでは、ほとんど移動に車を使う。どこまでも続くアスファルトの平坦な車道は、近代化の象徴のようである。そんな雄大な道とは反対に、日本やヨーロッパの街には多くの路地がある。それは昔人々が、まさしく足で作った道である。その道はまっすぐではなく、時には曲がり角からふと現れる思いもかけぬ景色に出会ったりする。その先には何があるのだろうか、この道はどこに進んでいくのだろうかと思わせるような路地をいくつか書いてみた。そして、道の脇に寄り添うように立ち並ぶ家々は、まるでレゴブロックで組み立てたようにひしめきあっている。そして一番最初にそこに家を建てた人が創造もしなかったような街がアートのように出来上がる。
